Resilience

Life is a journey filled with highs and lows, victories and setbacks.  Yet, what truly defines me is not how often I fall but how many times I rise.  Resilience, the ability to bounce back from adversity, is at the heart of success and personal growth.  It reminds me that success is not final, and failure is not fatal.  Rather, both are steppingstones on the path of becoming my best self.

Resilience is more than just enduring difficult times; it is about having the courage to continue despite them.  My courage does not always roar!  Most often, it is the quiet voice that whispers that I will be okay…I will try again tomorrow.  This inner strength, the willingness to persist even when the odds seem stacked against me, is what separates those who thrive from those when merely survive.

Consider the simple yet profound wisdom of the proverb: “Fall seven times, get up eight.” It speaks to the relentless determination that fuels resilience. Each fail is an opportunity for me to learn, grow, and come back stronger.  Every time I choose to rise, I reaffirm my belief in myself and my ability to shape my future.  I go through this process every day, sometimes with great success and other times with magnificent failure!

One of the most empowering truths about resilience is that it places the power and responsibility squarely in my hands.  No one else can pick me up, I must do it myself.  This self-reliance is both a challenge and a gift.  It means that no matter what happens, I can take control of my story and strive to rewrite the next chapter.  Failure is not a dead end; it’s simply a detour on my road to success and joy.

Thomas Edison famously said, “The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”  This mindset, or way of thinking, is the essence of resilience.  Edison’s determination. To keep experimenting, despite countless failures, ultimately led to the invention of the lightbulb, transforming the world in the process.  His story is a testament to the power of persistence and the belief that success is just beyond the point where most of us give up.

Building resilience requires practice and intention.  It involves developing the mental and emotional tools to navigate setbacks without losing hope.  This means embracing failure as a natural part of growth, rather than a reflection of my worth.  It also means cultivation a mindset of perseverance, knowing that every challenge can be an opportunity for me to become stronger and more capable.

At its core, resilience is about refusing temporary defeats define me.  It is about standing up, time and again, with the unwavering belief that my dreams are still within reach.  Success is not reserved for those of us who never fail…it belongs to those who never quit!

So the next time you face a setback, remember: Fall seven times, get up eight.   Embrace the quiet courage that tells you to try again tomorrow.  Trust in your ability to rise, no matter how many times you stumble.  Because resilience is not just about surviving the storms of life.  It is about learning to dance in the rain, knowing that brighter days are always within reach.

As we say here in Canada, “Keep your stick on the ice!”
